Introducing Filatura Di Crosa

In 1939 in Crosa, Italy – an area with a rich history of producing high quality wool yarns- Ettore Fillepo started a yarn company that is now known around the world as Filatura Di Crosa. Famous for its high quality and luxury fibres, this range of hand-knitting yarns, is sought after in yarn shops across the globe. And here we are today, over 75 years later, and Estelle Designs is proud to announce that we are now the official Canadian distributor for these gorgeous yarns.

Each year, Filatura Di Crosa produces 400,000 kilos of fancy yarns, which is the equivalent of over 10 million skeins of yarn! Each skein that they produce is just as gorgeous as the next- no matter your taste! They have worked with some of the world’s top fashion houses, such as Missoni, Versace and Valentino. It is with this, and the company’s commitment to excellence that you can be certain each and every skein that you touch, is of the highest calibre.

And while Filatura Di Crosa’s mill works hard at producing those 10 million skeins of yarn each year, their team of designers are working equally hard to produce over 700 patterns to support those skeins. Infused with the Italian style that is impossible to mimic, while using a broad cross-section of the most popular of their yarns, these patterns are fun to knit, and a joy to wear, proving the ‘Knitting Granny’ stereo-type to be the furthest thing from the truth.

As for their yarns, Filatura Di Crosa has kept things simple by breaking down their collection into four, easy to identify ranges- the Classic Line, Baby Line, Golden Line and Fancy Line.

The Classic Line includes some of the most well known of their yarns- including the incredibly popular ‘Zara’ collection. This range includes Zara, Zarina, Zara Plus, Zara 14 and Zarone, each name suggesting it’s different gauge. Available in a huge range of shades and thicknesses, this 100% superwash merino wool has a beautiful tight twist, making it perfect for cables and textured knitting.

The Baby Range of yarns contains some simply gorgeous yarns, all available in beautiful baby colours- both traditional, and non. Anything knit for the littlest one in your life is sure to be passed down between the generations. These yarns are what heirlooms are made of! The Fancy Line is exactly what it sounds like- so fancy! But don’t let that intimidate you if ‘glamorous’ doesn’t exactly sum up your style. Whether you use a little or use a lot, these luxury yarns are perfectly appropriate for special occasions, or everyday! Use a ball or two of Music for some fingerless gloves to set off an otherwise boring winter coat, or use ten balls of Gioello for a stunning wedding shawl. Perfect for New Years Eve, or keeping cozy on your couch, these yarns are sure to make any simple scarf stand out amongst the rest.

And lastly (but certainly not least!), The Golden Line of yarns truly sparkle and shine- and we don’t just mean that in the literal sense! Superior is a deluxe cashmere yarn that is light as air. You won’t even know you are wearing it- that is, until you take it off! This yarn is incredibly soft and is simply stunning when worked along with another strand of yarn. However, when knit solo, you will find that it gently floats to the ground like a feather- it is beyond beautiful!

And if actual sparkle is what you are looking for, Starlux is for you! It is a thread-like yarn, that when held together with a plain yarn, will add just a hint of sparkle to your work. So knit in a row or two periodically throughout a project, or knit it throughout the entirety of the garment! However you decide to use this yarn, it will elevate any piece from subtle and sophisticated, to ‘star status’.

The Filatura Di Crosa collection of yarns will be available in your local yarn store as of late Summer 2016, and will be available for viewing on our website shortly. In the meantime, have a browse through Filatura Di Crosa’s site, where you will view all of the yarns and shades available, as well as download PDF catalogues of their past designs.

We must warn you however, that once you have spent some time browsing the entire collection, you may find yourself itching to cast on something for next Fall- no matter how far away it may seem.
