Tips with Trish – Caring for Superwash Wool

When it comes to caring for your handknits you might be inclined to think that all wool should be treated alike but that is not the case. Today we’ll talk about superwash wool and how to properly block and care for it to protect and maintain the longevity of your precious handknits.

I’m no stranger to superwash wools having knit countless pair of socks in Estelle Evolution, and my go-to baby shower gift, Keith’s Cap in Superwash Merino DK, so it’s fair to say I’m familiar with blocking and caring for superwash wools and I’ve got a few tricks up my sleeve to share with you.

Superwash wool is treated with a special coating that allows us the luxury of machine washing and drying. This coating covers the scales that would normally adhere to one another in a non-superwash wool, thus creating the potential for stretching if not correctly handled. For this reason, it’s important to spray block superwash wool rather than wet block.

To spray block, simply pin your garment to the correct dimensions, spray evenly with a spray bottle to dampen the surface and allow to dry. Can’t find your spray bottle when you need it? Laying a damp towel on top and allowing it to dry completely is a great alternative. I find using towels straight out of the washing machine works perfectly!

When it comes to washing and caring for your handknits, it really couldn’t be easier. Friction is the number one cause of pilling so use as much water as your washing machine will allow and place your item in a mesh laundry bag. Next, be sure to use a good quality wool wash that is specifically designed for use on wool. Have a chat with the staff at your LYS, they’ll likely have one they recommend.

This next step might surprise you but, you’re going to go ahead and throw your item in the dryer – superwash wool loves the dryer! Remember those scales we talked about earlier that have lost their ability to adhere to one another thereby making your garment heavy and stretchy? Tumble drying on a low heat or air setting is just the ticket for springing your superwash wool garments back into shape! If you have other items in the dryer along with your handknit, be sure to keep it in the mesh laundry bag to avoid friction.

Always refer to the manufacturers care instructions on the label before beginning, and with this information and a little bit of patience you can confidently care for your superwash wool works of art with the gentle love they so deserve.
